Traditional Karate
Itosu-ryu Karatedo
A pure lineage of traditional Okinawan Karate, preserved and transmitted through four generations of masters.
Introduction
What is Itosu-ryu?
Itosu-ryu is a traditional style of Okinawan Karate that traces its origins directly to Master Anko Itosu (1830-1915), one of the most influential figures in the history of modern Karate. The style represents the pure transmission of Shuri-te techniques and philosophy.
The name “Itosu-ryu” (糸洲流) means “Itosu’s style” or “Itosu’s way,” honoring the founder who dedicated his life to refining and systematizing Karate techniques for future generations.
Unlike other styles that branched off and evolved separately, Itosu-ryu maintains the closest connection to the original teachings of Master Itosu, emphasizing kata practice as the foundation of all training.
Founder
Master Anko Itosu (1830-1915)
Anko Itosu, also known as “Ankō Asato,” was born in Shuri, Okinawa, in 1830. He studied under the legendary Sokon “Bushi” Matsumura and became one of the most prominent karate masters of his time.
Master Itosu is credited with several major innovations that shaped modern Karate:
- Created the five Pinan kata (基本型) to introduce beginners to Karate
- Simplified and systematized training methods for teaching in schools
- Advocated for Karate to be taught in Okinawan public schools (achieved in 1901)
- Emphasized the educational and character-building aspects of Karate
- Wrote the famous “Ten Precepts of Karate” in 1908
His vision transformed Karate from a secretive fighting art into a structured educational system that could benefit society as a whole.

Core Philosophy
Kata: The Heart of Itosu-ryu
In Itosu-ryu, kata is not merely a performance or exercise—it is the encyclopedia of Karate. Each kata contains:
- Fundamental techniques (kihon) in practical application
- Combat strategies and tactical principles
- Breathing methods and energy cultivation
- Traditional etiquette and spiritual elements
- Historical knowledge passed through generations
Master Itosu believed that by perfecting kata, a student would naturally develop all necessary skills for effective Karate, including timing, distance, power generation, and tactical awareness.
Official Recognition
Japan Kobudo Association
Itosu-ryu is the only Karate organization officially recognized by the prestigious Japan Kobudo Association
(日本古武道協会).
The Japan Kobudo Association is the official governing body for traditional Japanese martial arts (Kobudo), established to preserve and promote authentic classical martial arts that have been transmitted for generations.
This recognition affirms Itosu-ryu’s status as a legitimate traditional martial art with documented lineage, authentic techniques, and cultural significance, distinguishing it from modern sport karate systems.
Understanding the Difference
Itosu-ryu vs. Shito-ryu
Many people confuse Itosu-ryu with Shito-ryu, as they share historical connections.
Itosu-ryu (糸洲流)
- Direct transmission from Anko Itosu
- Pure Shuri-te lineage
- Focused on Itosu’s original teachings
- Emphasizes kata as primary training method
- Recognized by Japan Kobudo Association
- Smaller, more traditional organization
Shito-ryu (糸東流)
- Founded by Kenwa Mabuni (Itosu’s student)
- Combines Shuri-te and Naha-te
- Name combines “Ito” (Itosu) and “Higa” (Higaonna)
- Incorporates techniques from multiple sources
- One of the four major modern Karate styles
- Large international sport-oriented organization
In summary: While Shito-ryu is a synthesis created by Kenwa Mabuni combining teachings from multiple masters, Itosu-ryu represents the pure, direct transmission of Anko Itosu’s original Shuri-te system, maintained through the Sakagami family lineage.
